Just in case you didn’t know, Pantone picks a color of the year every year. The past couple of years have included colors like Ultra Violet, Greenery, and Rose Quartz. Last week, Pantone announced the color of the year for 2019 and I love it! Living Coral!
As Pantone states,”Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression”. That gave me all the inspiration I needed to make a colorful and playful cocktail, inspired by Living Coral, that will lift your spirits: The Coral 19!
When I was at Home Goods, something caught my eye that I knew would be perfect for this drink, Efferve’s Blood Orange sparkling lemonade! It was the exact color and flavors I was looking for. You can find Efferve sparkling lemonade at any Home Goods store. Home Goods is actually a great place to find inspiration for your next cocktail, they have a great food and drink section!
The Coral 19 is a variation of a French 75 that highlights orange and cranberry flavors. For this cocktail, the base spirit is vodka. I added in some fresh lemon juice and Cointreau to compliment the blood orange flavor. Instead of using plain simple syrup, I used my spiced cranberry simple syrup to add color and depth to the drink. You can make spiced cranberry simple syrup with equal parts sugar and water, half a cup of fresh cranberries, and some spices like star anise and whole all spice berries. Dissolves sugar and water over medium heat, add in cranberries and spices, take off heat and let steep for 20-30 minutes, then strain and let cool. You can also take out the spices to make regular cranberry simple syrup. I top off the cocktail with Efferve’s blood orange sparkling lemonade and add a cute pom pom drink stirrer for some extra color (you can buy these pom pom drink stirrers here). I hope you enjoy this lighthearted and colorful cocktail!
1 1/2oz – Vodka (I used Tito’s)
1/2oz – Cointreau
1/2oz – Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2oz – Spiced Cranberry Simple Syrup
4oz – Efferve Blood Orange Sparkling Lemonade
Combine the vodka, Cointreau, lemon juice, and simple syrup in cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake until cold. Strain into a rocks glass and top with the sparkling lemonade. Garnish with a lemon twist or a cute pom pom drink stirrer! Enjoy responsibly!
